Zoom into the Strait of Hormuz between Iran and Oman. Tankers, cargo ships and other commercial vessels can generally be identified by vessel type. Clicking individual ships may show their direction, speed, destination and the time their latest position was received.
These maps primarily display vessels detected through the Automatic Identification System (AIS). A vessel that does not appear on a tracker is not necessarily absent from the Strait. AIS transmissions can be delayed, unavailable, disabled, jammed or spoofed. Leiflets therefore uses public AIS traffic as an indicator of visible vessel activity rather than a definitive count of every ship in the area.
